James Swope after 86 years with us,  "Reached for the Master's Hand" in the early morning of August 9, 2017.

 

James Benny “Bubb” Swope was born in Cairo, Kentucky on February 10, 1931 to Burt and Fannie (Dixon) Swope. James departed this life on August 9th, 2017 in Wichita, Kansas. James attended an all-black Douglas High School where he ran track and created many state records. James continued his education at Grambling University in New Orleans, Lousianna, as the first freshman to start as running back position on the football team. He later enrolled in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War earning a purple heart and several metals for his years' service. After returning from war James married Genieve {McClure} on May 25th, 1955 in Henderson, Kentucky. They became members of Race Creek Baptist Church in Henderson, Kentucky. James was a dedicated deacon and choir member for many years. Together they participated in many boycotts and voter registration drives for civil rights during the 1950's and 60's. James and his wife were members of the PTA at their children's schools. James worked several years as a skilled carpenter and worked on many major construction projects {Uniontown Locks & Dam}. Many considered James to be a jack of all trades. James and his brother Josh, along with James sons, were log cutters in the Kentucky. James was an avid coon hunter, with his pride and joy dog "Red", whom he loved very much. Together the two won many hunting trophies for their successful hunts. James was also a tobacco- land/livestock farmer, with his wife and children for over twenty years. James was a well-known Barbeque pit master. James built and created many barbeque pits in the community and won several pit master competitions. James worked at Alcan Aluminum Corp. as a maintenance mechanic for twenty-two years until he retired. In 2008 James became seriously ill. His sons moved him to Wichita to continue caring for him until his departure of life. James was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, his parents and nine siblings. James leaves behind to celebrate his homegoing his children: Margie Avery of Evansville, In., Anthony Swope wife (Eleanor) of Evanston, IL., Tony Swope, Tommy Swope wife (Patty), Terr Swope wife (Janice), Delavarie McGill husband (John McGill), John Swope, Devonna Swope, Damitia Swope-Wright, Dana Swope all from Wichita, KS. Ella Swope of Henderson, KY. Twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
