On June 24, 2019 just before the setting of the sun, Mrs. Elnora H. Carlis “boarded the evening train bound for glory.”

Elnora Carlis 102, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away on June 24, 2019.  Elnora was born in Inola, Oklahoma to the parents of Eliza Jacques and Will Howard, her family eventually moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma where she lived until she relocated to the Wichita, Kansas to be near family and friends.  Elnora met Lonnie Carlis and they married in 1935 and were married 70 years, until his passing in 2005, to this union 2 sons were born.  For most of her life Elnora was a homemaker, she loved to cook and bake for her family and friends, for a small time she worked outside the home mostly doing domestic work.   In later years she helped with caring for her Great Grandson Bryson, whom she became very close with and often times when he was a small child you could find them sitting and talking or her reading him a book or listening to him read a book to her or explaining how a particular toy worked. Bryson refers to his great grandmother as “his best friend” who he still enjoyed talking to for hours even when he became an adult. 

 

Elnora was preceded in death by her parents; husband; Lonnie Carlis, son; Kenneth Carlis, sister; Olean, brothers; Earl, Provie,and Willie.

 

Elnora is survived by her son; Charles Carlis (Annette), grandchildren; Kim Canady (Rickey), Donetta London (Kevin),  Monica Carlis, DeAun Anding (Marlon), Marcus Carlis (Velmeta), LaTonya Carlis-Wyatt ( Jerry); former daughter in-law Kathy Rice (Jerry) who took excellent care of her and made sure she stayed fully engaged with family, great grandchildren; Bryson, Nyla, Ryleigh, Devontez, Miah, London, Kierra, Maia,Kyaun, Trinity, Jheryn, Javante, Danan, 3 great-great grandchildren, and nephew; Larry Howard.  Others who had a close bond with Elnora that she considered family; Vanessa Desmuke-McClure (Wayne), Angie Adams, Dwayne and LaNetra Stovall, Vickie Williams, Ronald Stephenson, Ray Johnson, and a host of other family and friends that she cherished.        

 

Elnora was a longtime member of the Northside Church of Christ and for a short time Westside Church of Christ both in Muskogee, Oklahoma until she moved to Wichita, Kansas where she attended Chisolm Trail Church of Christ.

 

Homecoming Services will be held, at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Chisolm Trail Church of Christ, 5833 East 37th Street North, Wichita, Kansas 67220 with Brother Barry L. Gainey officiating.

 

Funeral Services are under the direction of Robert J. Bethea Funeral Home, 615 West Maple Street, Wichita, Kansas 67213.
