Lois Laval Powell was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma on September 26th, 1944. Lois was one of nine children born to Cornelius and Vanita Bell. She was educated in Pawnee, Oklahoma where she graduated from Pawnee High School, home of the Pawnee Black Bears. As a teenager she performed a variety of tasks working at the State hospital in Arkansas City Kansas. While attending Hutchinson Community college Lois met and married Eddie H. Powell. From this union two children were born, Erickson H. Powell and Y. LaShay Powell.
Lois began her career in the insurance business in the late 1960's. She worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas for over 30 years and retired as the Manager of Customer Services. Throughout her career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Lois worked a myriad of second jobs including TG& Y, Nice's Greenhouse and Floral Shop, and Kohl's. Her most notable second job was in the jewelry department at Wal-Mart where she worked for nearly twenty -five years.
Lois always had a variety of interest and hobbies. Although she rarely had any, in her spare time she enjoyed sewing and upholstery, playing tennis, collecting frog figurines and sunflower paintings, and watching a multiple of sporting events- especially OU football and WSU Basketball. Her fondness for gardening grew into a passion. During retirement she began working with James Marks Landscaping and Terry Littlejohn's Landscaping companies. In 2016 Lois earned the coveted award of Master Gardener by the Sedgwick County Extension of the Kansas State Research and Extension Department. Lois was also featured in Wichita's Parade of Homes on multiple occasions.
Lois departed this life on March 18th, 2020. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her sisters, Dr. Quilla Dean Bell and Lurline Spencer; her brothers, Willie (Scrap) Davis and John (Chris) Bell.
Lois is survived by her brothers, Joshua Bell: Cornelius Bell, II; her sisters; Leann Bell and Tammy Bell of Pawnee, Oklahoma; her son, Erickson H. Powell and his wife Melody; her daughter, Yvette LaShay Powell; Lauryn L. Powell, granddaughter; Erickson H. Powell, grandson: (All of Wichita, Kansas) Lois also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and beloved friends.
